Gibt es überhaupt Strategien und Anwendungen des bewussten Überspringens von Entwicklungsstufen?

Leapfrogging refers to the conscious skipping or omitting of stages of development to transition directly to more advanced technologies, processes, or products. This concept is applied in various fields such as business, technology, and sustainable development. It enables both companies and nations to make leaps in innovation without having to go through the traditional, often resource-intensive intermediate stages.

Where do we experience Leapfrogging?

  • Technology: Developing countries skip the establishment of landline infrastructures and directly adopt mobile technologies.

  • Sustainability: The direct transition to renewable energies like solar or wind power without the detour through fossil fuels.

  • Business strategy: Companies skip product generations to bring innovative products to market faster and gain competitive advantages.

Leapfrogging is often used as a strategy to increase efficiency, reduce costs, and penetrate markets faster. However, it also carries risks such as loss of competencies or uncertainties in the introduction of new technologies.

Leapfrogging as a constitutive development myth

Leapfrogging serves as a metaphor for a leap that should be attuned to. It sounds attractive if one could simply skip missed developments to compensate for omissions. One can take a critical stance, as history teaches us that the negation of anticipation, which is so important for success, is not always a blessing.

The metaphor of Leapfrogging sometimes reveals a problematic tendency of instrumental reason. The belief that technological progress is linear and arbitrary speeding is possible if only the right means are available often misses the purpose of a venture. In my opinion, we must examine the promises surrounding Artificial Intelligence in this regard.

The Leapfrogging mindset neglects the dialectical nature of development processes. While skipping stages of development seems superficially efficient, essential learning processes and experiences may be lost. History shows that sustainable innovation often arises from engaging with contradictions and gradually overcoming obstacles—not by circumventing them. This is especially reflected in potential losses of competencies and uncertainties.

Those who rush to reach the goal often lose patience. But those who focus on the journey and take each step carefully reach the goal safely.

This wisdom reminds us that true learning and growth require time. Quick fixes may be tempting, but they rarely lead to lasting success. Instead, we should view each step of development as valuable and learn from the challenges we encounter along the way. This approach builds a solid foundation for long-term success.

Private Leapfrogging as a critical example

A vivid example of problematic Leapfrogging is found in the university context. Sleeping through lectures and attempting to compensate for the missed content with automatically generated transcriptions based on audio recordings illustrates the limits of technological shortcuts. Physical presence in a lecture offers more than just the mere transfer of information—it enables direct interaction, non-verbal communication, and the immediate experience of academic discourse.

The recording may preserve the factual content, and the transcription allows full-text search of what was said. However, the endeavor misses essential dimensions of the learning process. The atmosphere of the lecture hall, spontaneous questions, the gestures and facial expressions of the lecturer, and the collective learning experience are lost. The supposed efficiency gain through technological Leapfrogging results in an impoverishment of educational experience here.

The instrumental reason that manifests in the systematic avoidance of in-person teaching in favor of technological alternatives overlooks the complex social and cognitive dimensions of learning. The hoped-for "leap" from the traditional lecture form often results in a superficial understanding and lack of academic integration.

Sustainability of Leapfrogging

I understand sustainable innovation as progress that inherently possesses societal normativity. Perhaps there are no shortcuts in the search for orientation, and the cult of short-termism leads to a lack of orientation and thus to a loss of meaning. Meaning does not stick then. Meaningfulness seems important to me, even when dealing with developmental leaps. As attractive as they may sound.

Fundamental prerequisites for successful Leapfrogging

A critical analysis of the Leapfrogging concept shows that successful developmental leaps require certain prerequisites:

  • Informed decision-making basis: Leapfrogging should be the result of careful Deliberation, not the starting point of strategic planning.

  • Understanding of complexity: The metaphor of "jumping over" must not lead to a simplification of complex development processes.

  • Awareness of learning processes: The necessary competencies and experiential knowledge must be built despite accelerated development.

  • Responsible implementation: Implementation must be driven by genuine understanding and not superficial promises of efficiency.

Leapfrogging is not a tool that can be used arbitrarily but the result of well-considered developmental processes. Simply calling for more Leapfrogging or the unreflective use of new technologies such as AI does not lead to the goal. Instead, it requires:

  • Considered assessment: Which development steps can actually be skipped without losing important learning experiences?

  • Holistic consideration: How do developmental leaps impact the overall system and its stakeholders?

  • Sustainable integration: How can new technologies or processes be sustainably embedded into existing structures?

The success of Leapfrogging initiatives largely depends on the ability to understand them not as an isolated strategy but as a possible outcome of a thoughtful development process. Freedom and responsibility play a crucial role as mutually supportive concepts.

Leapfrogging is not a strategy that can be imposed, but the result of wise deliberation and responsible decision-making.

This perspective enables developmental leaps to be realized where they are genuinely meaningful and sustainable, without falling into unreflective progress optimism.
