15 years ago, Germany was digitally reserved; today, the D21 Digital Index shows that initiatives like D21 are essential to advance in the digital age. Our digital future depends on continuous development.

Earlier, much earlier. About 15 years ago, I would think, we were thirsty for numbers to prove to ourselves we were on the right track. Back then, this study was called the (N)onliner Atlas. Most Germans struggled with the Internet. Proof enough that people wanted to count themselves among the digital avant-garde.
Back then, the question for Sundays was …
How many Germans are on the Internet?
I probably stopped taking a closer look at this study more than 10 years ago. The study no longer showed significant developments. The numbers settled towards a mark over 90%, and I had also moved on from the further findings.
The story was over. Even back then, it was clear that Germany would settle into digital mediocrity.
The realization remained that initiatives like D21 are urgently needed. The work of the D21 Initiative is important.
A quick glance at the current D21-Digital-Index 2024/2025 shows me that one can transcend the information about the current litany on AI. The survey period, set in the summer of 2024, is already light years behind us, so it already feels like a year ago. I will still see what systemic hints and myths come to meet me from the study.
I will incorporate that selectively into my data set (after thorough review). Once my evaluation is complete, you will receive a note over in the bibliography.
