Update from Jun 25, 2025
When we examine health policy in this compendium, we fundamentally orient ourselves towards perspectives in the field of public health. Both areas share common goals and principles, particularly the promotion of public health and the prevention of diseases.
Common Goals
Health policy should promote the health of the population through targeted interventions, provide the framework to manage diseases, and, most importantly, adopt an attitude that health may succeed.
A connection to the field of health equity logically arises. Creating health equity is another claim that corresponds with public health and is no longer solely focused on healthcare companies. By now, every company, every organization is a health enterprise in this sense.
This aligns with the core goals of public health, namely the improvement of living conditions and the promotion of physical and mental health6.
Interdisciplinarity
Public health is an interdisciplinary field that integrates various disciplines such as epidemiology, health economics, social medicine, and health policy. The formulation of health policy is based on scientific findings from these areas and contributes to the implementation of public health measures.
Health-in-All-Policies Principle:
A central approach in public health is the consideration of health aspects in all policy areas (Health in All Policies), which represents a close connection to health policy. Health policy is used as an instrument to implement health-promoting measures across sectors.
Prevention and Health Promotion:
Both areas place a strong emphasis on prevention and health promotion. Health policy designs programs and structures for prevention and rehabilitation, while public health scientifically underpins and practically implements these measures.
Health policy is an integral part of public health. It provides the framework for implementing health-promoting measures and supports the strategic orientation of the entire public health system.
